The BIO-PLATEAUX project is co-financed by the European Union through the Interreg Amazon Cooperation Program. It aims at developing the sharing of data, information and experiences on water and biodiversity in aquatic environments between French Guiana, Brazil and Suriname, particularly in the two transboundary basins of the Oiapoque and Maroni rivers.
On July 1, 2026, in Brasília, Jean-Noël Barrot, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, and Mauro Vieira, Brazil’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, signed a declaration of intent establishing a dialogue body dedicated to the integrated management of the Oyapock River basin.
From June 21 to 27, 2026, the International Office for Water participated, alongside French government agencies and their Surinamese counterparts, in the interministerial canoe mission organized by the Subprefecture of Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni. The week-long journey up the river, from Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni to the villages of Talwen, Antecume Pata, and Pidima, brought together representatives from the prefecture, the French Embassy in Suriname, security forces, and environmental and diplomatic authorities from both countries.
From June 16 to 19, 2026, the BIO-PLATEAUX project participated in the International Network of Basin Organizations (INBO) Watersheds Summit, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This international event brought together representatives from basin organizations, public authorities, and experts from around the world to discuss the challenges of integrated water resources management in the face of climate change, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable regional development. During this event, the Network’s presidency was transferred from France to Brazil.
