M. Chan Santokhi, President of Surinamese Republic, invited M. Alexandre, President of the Guiana Territorial Collectivity (CTG) in Paramaribo, to participate to the 45th anniversary of independence on 25th November 2020.

During this visit, the Maroni River has been at the heart of the exchanges, on three aspects:

- river transport, with the project of new ferry supported by the Interreg Amazonia Cooperation Program (PCIA),

- the delimitation of the border, on which negotiations have made very significant progress in recent months,

- water quality and health, with the official announcement by the Surinamese government to ban all illegal mining activity on the Maroni.

These advances are evidences of the positive relations between the two territories. They also show the importance of the management of Maroni basin, as a key-bone issue in order to strengthen mutual cooperation.
