The first automatic turbidity monitoring station run by France and Suriname was installed in the municipality of Grand Santi on 18 February 2025!
Evolution of the turbidity of rivers affect the life and health of the people living by the river. It is also an indicator of pressure on the resource.
This station, located downstream of the confluence of the Tapanahony and the Lawa, demonstrates the desire for joint monitoring between France and Suriname.
Putting into practice the provisions of the administrative arrangement signed in Paramaribo between France and Suriname on 1 November 2024, this is an important advance in understanding the quality of the Maroni watershed. This pilot experiment should be replicated for the establishment of a jointly structured monitoring network.
This station was set up in partnership between the Ministry of Public Works of Suriname, the General Directorate for Territories and the Sea and the Water Office of French Guiana, in close coordination with the Municipality of Grand Santi and the Community of Communes of Western Guyana.
It has also benefited from the financial support of the European Union, the Territorial Collectivity of French Guiana, the French Office of Biodiversity and the National Centre for Space Studies.
