The Ministry of Public Works of Suriname and the International Office for Water(OiEau) signed a partnership agreement on 4 April for the implementation of the BIO-PLATEAUX II project.

The document was signed by Mrs Laronde, Director of International Cooperation of OiEau, and Mr Kadosoe, Director of Services of the Ministry of Public Works of Suriname, in the presence of Mrs Steenwinkel, Vice-President of the Territorial Collectivity of French Guiana, and Mr Lecante, President of the Water and Biodiversity Committee of French Guiana.

Together with stakeholders and institutions in Suriname and French Guiana, this document strengthens links and provides a framework for all project activities: governance, coordination of stakeholder networks, water resource knowledge and basin planning.

The signing ceremony highlighted examples of highly topical joint work in the Maroni basin:

  • Presentation of the on-going mission (3-5 April 2024) to strengthen the water level monitoring network to improve flood control, led by the partners of the French Guiana Hydrological Watch Unit (French General Directorate for Land and Sea), in partnership with the Suriname Hydrological Research Laboratory.
  • Joint inventory work (drinking water, pressures) on the Maroni from 15 April 2024, in partnership with the Community of Municipalities of Western French Guiana and the Water Office of French Guiana.
  • Preparation for the Paramaribo Conference, which the Surinamese partners have announced for 5-7 September 2024.
