The BIO-PLATEAUX project was present at COP30 in Belém, the first COP ever held in the Amazon.

On 10 November 2025, the France Pavilion hosted a meeting bringing together representatives from the three partner countries, introduced by Mr. Touenké, Grand Man Wayan of the Upper Maroni, who spoke about the needs of cross-border territories:

  • Mr. Jean-Paul Ferreira, Vice-President, Territorial Collectivity of French Guiana (CTG)
  • Ms. Patricia Ferraz, Secretary of State for International Relations of Amapá, Brazil
  • Mr. Rene Somopawiro, Director of Research and Development, Foundation for Forest Management of Suriname
  • Ms. Barbara Pompili, Ambassador for the Environment, France

The session was moderated by Mr. Tardieu, Director General of the International Office for Water, which coordinates the project.

The joint messages delivered at the COP aim to raise awareness of the exceptional cultural and environmental heritage of the Guiana Shield, as well as the serious threats weighing on local populations and ecosystems (climate change, impacts of activities on river basins — including illegal gold mining, access to essential services such as water, waste management and food security). Addressing this set of challenges requires urgent collective responses, while building lasting decision-support mechanisms for shared cross-border river basins.

A session on space hydrology was then held, organised in partnership with the French National Centre for Space Studies (CNES), the National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and the Environment (INRAE), and the Research Institute for Development (IRD). As a core innovation pillar of the BIO-PLATEAUX project on transboundary river basins, satellite data plays a strategic role in improving knowledge of rainfall, water levels and environmental quality, complementing on-site monitoring systems to better understand how rivers function.

BIO-PLATEAUX is funded by the European Union and the INTERREG Amazon Cooperation Programme.
